Teak Maintenance Guide

Teak Maintenance Guide

As the days grow longer and warmer, outdoor living returns. Protective covers are lifted, and gardens are once again transformed into spaces for entertaining and quiet retreat. As you prepare your space, we are pleased to offer some guidance on caring for your teak furniture.

Coloured Teak Care:

Renowned for its strength and elegance, teak furniture is rich in naturally occurring oils that will develop a distinguished silver-grey patina that blends effortlessly into the surrounding landscape. For those who prefer the original tone, treatments can be used to maintain its original hue. For coloured finishes, we recommend annual treatment using a specialist kit or high-quality teak oil to maintain optimal condition. This helps preserve colour depth while enhancing protection.

Begin by removing any cushions and placing the furniture in a well ventilated area. Next using a clean sponge, carefully wipe down the surface to remove any dirt or residue, then gently sand the surface to remove light stains and restore a smooth finish. Once clean, apply the provided teak oil evenly along the wood grain with a brush. We recommend testing the coloured oil on a small, hidden area first to ensure a suitability. Then once fully dry, brush the teak protector along the wood grain in the same way. Finally, allow your piece to dry before use.

Our teak oils are available in three shades, Beige, Honey Brown and Grey Brown. Each has been designed to complement specific finishes within our teak outdoor furniture collections. For best results, always match the oil to its intended collection to preserve the integrity of the finish.

Natural Teak Care:

The rest of our teak ranges are made from a beautiful natural teak which requires a slightly different maintenance technique. Natural Teak specialists recommend no treatment for the first three months to allow the wood to adjust to its new environment. You may notice some initial water staining, this will fade over time as the teak begins to release its own oils. If you wish to maintain or restore colour, a light sanding followed by a specialist teak restorer, such as Semco Teak Sealer, may be used. View our teak maintenance guide to see step by step instructions.

Year-Round Care:

Another way to preserve your teak furniture throughout the year is outdoor furniture covers. Crafted from high quality, weather resistant materials Nth Degree offer custom covers, designed to provide maximum protection whilst allowing important air flow. This will protect your piece from UV rays and therefore minimise risk of colour fading. Visit our website to learn more about protective outdoor furniture covers.
